The challenge for the Virus Database project was to manage and provide access to a massive, ever-growing database of viral sequences, taxonomy, and associated metadata. This is crucial for advancing virology research, ensuring data is reliable, and supporting the development of treatments and diagnostics.

The solution implemented involved creating an automated Airflow pipeline for the generation of NCBI Virus RefSeq records, allowing for the consistent and reliable addition of viral sequence data. Development of a program-level dataflow group was also initiated to ensure standardized processes across the database.
